CNH Industrial acquires aluminum sprayer boom manufacturer

CNH Industrial has acquired Specialty Enterprises, the largest manufacturer of aluminum spray booms for agricultural applications in North America.

Specialty operates one manufacturing facility in Wautoma, Wisconsin, and has been a supplier to Case IH since 2020. This acquisition of spray boom production is part of Case IH’s long-term strategy for its sprayer product line-up, CNH Industrial said in a release.

“We are thrilled to be working so closely with Specialty, which has been a fantastic partner to Case IH over the last few years as we deliver more productive application solutions,” says Scott Harris, global president for Case IH. “This acquisition strengthens our in-house capabilities and allows us to retain key strategic personnel to ensure continuity in this vertical integration.”

Durable design

Aluminum spray booms can be up to 50% lighter than steel counterparts, typically weighing 2,000 to 3,000 pounds less, according to Specialty’s website. This results in better weight distribution, meaning less field compaction and rutting.

The company’s sprayer boom design incorporates multiple patents, including its Millennium line of “ultra-durable” aluminum, to reduce the fatigue cracking associated with aluminum boom designs. Aluminum metal also has a higher natural elasticity than steel, allowing it to bend without breaking.

“At Case IH, one of our primary crop production goals is to help operators cover more acres more efficiently — with solutions that are built to last,” says Monte Weller, Case IH global product manager for Crop Production and Hay & Forage product lines. “This acquisition will be key to providing operators with the equipment and agronomic solutions they need to feed a growing world.”

Specialty started as a welding and fabrication job shop in 1987, since expanding into a manufacturing company serving agriculture, aerospace, defense, and commercial construction. In 2010, Specialty began working to become the premiere aluminum sprayer boom manufacturer in North America. The aluminum used by Specialty is sourced and extruded in the U.S.
