In today’s evening edition, catch up on the latest about avian influenza losses, fertilizer application strategy, and the future of animal feed.

Nitrogen Inhibitors

Editor Chelsea Dinterman reports on the tools available to manage your fertilizer application strategies this year.

When minimizing fertilizer use, farmers run the risk of losing nitrogen (N) and giving up yield. Nitrogen inhibitors can be a powerful tool to prevent N loss.

Using nitrogen inhibitors with spring fertilizer applications can help mitigate the risk of changing weather patterns.

Avian Influenza

With new reported cases of avian influenza across Colorado, Pennsylvania, Minnesota, and Idaho, the U.S. total of affected birds is now over 30 million.

Editor Madelyn Ostendorf reports that state officials quarantined the affected premises, and birds on the properties are depopulated to prevent the spread of the disease. Birds from the flocks do not enter the food system.

Animal Feed

The demand to increase food production for a growing population coupled with the need to reduce the carbon footprint of agriculture are driving the search for new sources of protein for animal feed, writes Editor Laurie Bedord.

Innovafeed believes the black soldier fly meets the requirements for a low-cost, nutritious, and eco-friendly alternative.

Using an innovative model of industrial collaboration already demonstrated in its other facilities, Innovafeed is building the world’s largest insect farm in Decatur, Illinois, next to ADM’s corn processing plant.
